ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER![]() Abelman, Frayne, &Schwab This Week In Intellectual Property History for December 12-18, 2010 On December 13, 1949, the Ronzoni Macaroni Company Inc. received a trademark registration for their brand of spaghetti sauce: Emanuele Ronzoni and family The Ronzoni Macaroni Company was founded by Emanuele Ronzoni. Ronzoni emigrated to the United States from San Fruttuoso, Italy, in 1881, at the age of 11. While in his teens, he worked at a series of jobs in the macaroni business in New York. In 1892, he and a partner started a small macaroni company, and in 1895, he joined two other partners to create the Atlantic Macaroni Company, where for 19 years, he was in charge of production. The business moved from Canal Street in Manhattan to Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City. In 1915, Emanuele decided to strike out on his own and the first Ronzoni Macaroni Co. opened on 35th Street and Northern Boulevard. The business thrived. Emanuele's three sons, Emanuele, Jr., Angelo and Raymond joined their father. In 1950 a large modern production facility at 50-02 Northern Boulevard began operation. The 1950's and 1960's were the period of the company's most significant growth with expansion of facilities and new market introductions. Ronzoni became available in nearly every state along the eastern and western seaboards and Puerto Rico. The company's advertisements proclaimed proudly in Emanuele Ronzoni's mother tongue "Ronzoni sono buoni." The Ronzoni family in 2002 On December 14, 1920, The Crawford McGregor & Canby Company received a registration of their brand of gold balls and clubs: It all began a long time ago - in fact during the century before last. Edward Canby (a partner in the Dayton Shoe Last Company) was introduced to the game of golf during a trip to Scotland. With their wood craftsmanship skills, in 1897 the Crawford, MacGregor and Canby Company produced its first golf club. The years that followed saw MacGregor produce many of the greatest persimmon woods ever created. By around 1910 golf was booming in America and was becoming the "in" sport amongst the country's affluent. In 1927, MacGregor was the first company to produce a finished club with a steel shaft. This was a significant advance for which MacGregor is still noted. Over the following years a number of the game's greatest players and club makers became involved with and associated with MacGregor: Tommy Armour, Toney Penna, Byron Nelson, Jimmy Demaret and Ben Hogan. Through the years 1937 to 1959 MacGregor players compiled an utterly staggering record of winning 26 Major titles (The British Open, The Masters, The US Open and the US PGA Championship). Through the majority of the 1940's over 50% of the field at any US PGA event played MacGregor Clubs. During this era MacGregor clubs were also used by other notable Professionals including; Gene Littler, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus each of whom won the US Amateur title whilst using MacGregor clubs. In fact Jack Nicklaus had been using MacGregor clubs since the age of 10. |
