This Week In Intellectual Property History for the Week of March 6-12, 2011

On March 9, 1965 the Kellogg Company received a trademark registration for the name of their new brand of cereal:

Kellogg's launched Froot Loops cereal in 1963 with the Toucan Sam character. He wore a towering Carmen Miranda-style hat of fruits.

Toucan Sam has a magical power possessed by no other creature in his jungle: with his nose, he can sniff out the delicious natural orange, lemon, and cherry flavours in Kellogg's Froot Loops cereal. He does this time and time again while singing his famous lyric "follow my nose, it always knows..."

Toucan Sam has remained virtually unchanged, as has the campaign used worldwide, since its inception.
